The less we are aware of our thoughts, feelings, motives and behaviors, the more they control us. Psychotherapy helps clients understand their ‘stories’ and the experiences that shaped them; the defensives that have helped protect them and the patterns or habits that are now preventing them from achieving hopes, goals, and dreams. Psychotherapy is a dialogue. That dialogue determines ideas, means, and interpretation(s). It is vital that psychotherapy progresses at a pace that is comfortable/safe for the client; hence, meeting the client where they are! Change can feel frightening and overwhelming, however, we will collaborate a partnership that moves at a healthy, steady, but flexible pace for you.
how do i chose the right therapist for me?
Most client can tell after an initial session whether they feel comfortable with a therapist’s style. Please feel free to speak up if you do not feel comfortable; it will not offend. It is important that you develop an alliance of trust; a collective collaboration.
what can psychotherapy do for me that a self-help book can’t?
Self-help books contain generalizations based on someone else’s story or lived experience(s). While self-help books play an important role in out culture and personal agency, they often don’t offer flexibility. Individualized approach that is often needed to bring about last changes can be tailored to your specific needs and experiences through the lens of psychotherapy.
